Harry Potter Silhouette Frames

Harry Potter Silhouette Frames DIY

If you’re looking for a way to add some extra detail to your party, these Harry Potter Silhouette frames are the perfect touch! The frames were all purchased from the Family Dollar. If you’re curious about the sizing, the frame with the castle is 8 in x 10 in, the one with Always is 5 in x 7 in and the one with the Gryffindor crest is 4 in x 6 in. I loved the frame that I put the castle in. Fun detail and perfect color for only $5, can’t beat that! The one with the Gryffindor crest was originally black but I thought it would look better if it was the same color as the crest so I spray painted it gold.

If you’re doing any kind of spray painting I recommend it all be done outdoors. If you’re like me and live in a studio apartment, have no balcony, don’t want the wind carrying paint onto the cars in the parking lot and sometimes make poor life choices, then the tub is your best bet. Just make sure it’s fully covered in magazine pages or a tarp! I made the mistake of not covering the whole tub and was left with a colorful gold ring in it. (If this happens to you, Kaboom is amazing! I covered the unwanted spray paint in it, let it sit for about five minutes and scrubbed it away fairly easily with water.) Once the spray paint was dry I went over it with a layer of clear sealer.

This was my first time working with vinyl so I have no idea if I bought the right type or put it on properly. You may not be able to tell from the photos but there were a good number of bubbles that popped up behind the castle. If anyone has a way to remedy that please let me know! I ended up buying Premium Outdoor Glossy Vinyl. Since these are on the outside of the glass I thought that sounded like the best bet to keep them in tact the longest.

The castle and Always were purchased off of Etsy from Love SVG Designs. The last time I checked they no longer have this in their shop. You can either ask if they’d bring it back or just search Etsy for the designs you’re looking for, there are tons. The crest was purchased from ClaireBsCaboodles and she still has it! Once purchased, I was sent links to download all of the images which easily uploaded to my Cricut design space. If it’s your first time working with vinyl, I definitely recommend watching some YouTube videos. Without them I wouldn’t have known to buy the Vinyl Transfer Tape. This is extremely helpful with making sure everything is lined up before you place it down and helps your design go on without creasing.

The background can be anything. Paper, fabric, be as creative as you want! For the crest and Always, I used some gold and maroon fabric scraps I found at JOANN Fabrics. The background of the castle is ripped out pages from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince that I bought at Half Price Books. Fear not, the rest of the book will not go to waste. I have plenty of ideas for how I’m going to use it in future projects.

These are pretty simple pieces but can really pop when displayed around all of your other Halloween/Harry Potter decorations. I just love the extra detail it adds when needing to fill some extra space.

Supplies

  • Frames
  • Spray paint (I used Krylon Hammered Finish in Gold)
  • Sealer (I used Krylon Sealer in Clear)
  • Vinyl (black and gold)
  • Vinyl Transfer Tape
  • Background paper/fabric
  • Cricut

Ignore the tube of lipstick. I put it down while I was setting up and forgot to remove it while I was taking photos. This is what I used to write “The Chamber of Secrets has been opened…” message on the bathroom mirror.
