Pastel Carnival Birthday Party

Pastel Carnival Birthday: A Sweet Second Birthday Celebration

Truthfully, this pastel carnival birthday theme had been on my heart long before this party ever came together. Originally, I had planned a pastel carnival birthday for Violet’s first. A lot was going on in our lives that first year and we ended up keeping things simple with a small celebration at home surrounded by family.

As her second birthday neared, I was still in love with the pastel carnival theme and knew nothing else would compare. I’m so glad I stuck with it because it came together even more beautifully than I imagined, and I can’t wait to show you all the little details.

How to Decorate a Pastel Carnival Birthday Party

If you’ve read my other birthday posts, it probably won’t surprise you that I spent plenty of time on Pinterest and put my Cricut to good use for this one. While there were so many fun carnival ideas out there, most leaned into the classic bold red, yellow, and blue color palette. I loved the inspiration, but knew I wanted something a little softer, so I reimagined many of those ideas using pastels instead. The entire party came together around light pink, blue, yellow, green, lavender, and hints of gold. From the balloons to the desserts to even the smallest decorative details, everything stayed within that palette, which made the whole setup feel effortlessly cohesive.

The Setup

As guests arrived, they were greeted by streamers cascading down the hallway walls, guiding them straight to the main celebration. A soft pastel balloon garland lined the staircase. From the dining room, you could already catch glimpses of what was to come: ice cream cones hanging from the chandelier and a table filled with balloons, carnival tickets, party hats, and colorful plates and cups. And then, as you made your way into the family room, everything opened up to the heart of the party, where the dessert table, craft station, goodie bag setup, face painting, and plenty of food and drinks all came together in one cheerful, inviting space. If that wasn’t enough, guests were welcome to enjoy the nice day outside in the backyard while kids went wild in the bounce house.

The Decorations

One of my favorite things to make each year is the Happy Birthday banner. I love coming up with ways to customize it to the theme. For the banner this year, I purchased the template from JacqsCraftyCorner on Etsy. Since I had originally purchased this for her first birthday party, it was a milestone banner with numbers. To cut out letters instead, I downloaded The Circus Font from Creative Fabrica, and I cut everything out using my Cricut. I absolutely loved how it turned out and don’t think I could have found a more perfect banner. To make it easy on yourself, JacqsCraftyCorner does have a Happy Birthday banner version.

If you saw Rose’s “3 Scoops of Fun” third birthday party, then you may recognize a few of these decorations. From her party, I was able to reuse the hanging ice cream cones, party hats, and ice cream cones in jars. Ice cream fit this theme so well that I was able to blend the hanging cones in seamlessly.

The Dessert Table

The dessert table was easily the centerpiece and one of my favorite parts. On the table, we had a ferris wheel filled with cupcakes, a treat stand of cones stuffed with cotton candy, and, of course, the birthday cake at the center. As much as I loved the treat stand, I wasn’t a big fan of the cones that came with it, so I used these instead. Behind it all, the pastel circus backdrop really tied the whole setup together. And right beside it, we had a popcorn machine that a friend generously let me borrow, which was such a perfect on-theme touch.

Fun Activities for All

Since our friends’ kids range in age, I always try to create a mix of activities so everyone has something to enjoy. The littlest ones were perfectly happy outside in the bounce house or simply running around inside tossing balloons and being silly, you really can’t beat toddler entertainment. For something a bit more hands-on, especially for the older kids, I set up a “create your own carousel” station. I used my Cricut to cut out carousel horses and tent tops, and laid out crayons, markers, glitter glue, tape, straws for the pole, and paper cups for the base. Each child decorated their pieces however they liked, then assembled everything by placing a straw into a pre-cut cup and taping their horse and tent top to it, it was fun to see how different everyone’s came out.

Alongside that, we had face painting, temporary tattoos, and the cutest little clown noses for everyone to enjoy. I found a great face painting kit online, and a sweet friend volunteered to be our artist for the day. Seeing the kids running around with painted faces and cute blue or pink noses, trying to decide which station to visit next, was one of my favorite parts. It was one of those moments where you could just feel how much fun they were having.

Favor Boxes fit for a Pastel Carnival Birthday

At the end of the party, each child went home with a carousel-themed box filled with a few simple, fun surprises. I found the sweetest pink and white striped boxes online and added a carousel horse to the front using my Cricut to tie everything into the theme. Inside, I kept it classic and kid-friendly with animal cookies, bubbles, and temporary tattoos, just enough to feel special without being over the top.

A Sweet Ending

There’s just something so special about second birthdays, they’re still little enough to be fully in the moment, yet big enough to truly soak in the magic around them. This pastel carnival birthday theme felt like the sweetest way to celebrate that in-between stage; soft, playful, and full of joy without ever feeling overwhelming. If you’re planning a second birthday and are drawn to something whimsical, timeless, and a little bit magical, this theme is such a beautiful way to bring it all to life.

If you recreate anything from this party or add your own twist, I would love to see it. It’s always so fun seeing how these ideas come to life in different ways.
