When my daughter asked for a mermaid party this year, I knew I wanted to lean fully into an “under the sea” theme, full of color and tons of little details that would make the entire space feel like its own tiny ocean world.
I’ll be honest, this theme pushed me outside of my usual comfort zone. I tend to gravitate toward softer, pastel color palettes, so going bold with bright pinks, purples, blues, and pops of gold felt like a bit of a stretch for me creatively. But once everything came together, I absolutely loved how vibrant and fun it felt.

When guests first arrived, I wanted them to feel like they were stepping into something special right away. The hallway leading into the main party space was lined with colorful “seaweed” streamers along the walls, creating a simple but immersive entrance. It set the tone immediately and made the transition into the party feel a little more magical. Above, I draped blue tablecloths across the ceiling to mimic water, adding black cutouts of sea creatures like sharks, turtles, and stingrays swimming overhead. It was one of those elements that made such a big impact with relatively simple materials.

The main focal point of the party was the fireplace area, which really tied everything together. A mermaid tail balloon arch framed the space, paired with hanging jellyfish that added movement and texture. The jellyfish were unexpectedly one of my favorite decor purchases and received some of the most compliments. The balloon arch ended up being my favorite one I’ve created for any party so far, it pulled everything together in the prettiest, most eye-catching way and really made the whole setup feel complete. This year, I spent some time watching a few tutorials to improve my balloon arch technique, and I also purchased two balloon kits, which made the final look feel much fuller and more complete.
I also created a homemade banner and strung paper seashells across the mantle to bring in more of those ocean-inspired details. It felt full without being overwhelming, and it gave the whole space that cohesive, under-the-sea feel I was going for.

Of course, the dessert table ended up being my favorite part, like it usually is. I added a beautiful blue sequin skirt around the table that instantly reminded you of ocean waves, which set the stage for everything else. A blue tablecloth was placed on top to cover the wooden top to give the whole table an underwater look. The cake was homemade and decorated with sea-inspired pieces like starfish, seaweed, and a mermaid tail, and I topped it with a custom mermaid-themed topper with Rose’s name on it. This was the first time I made a cake topper, and love how it turned out! If you’d like to make it yourself, search “mermaid cake topper” on Cricut Design Space. The creator is Elaine Andaya, and it will be one of the top results.

The rest of the desserts were just as fun to put together. There were cupcakes topped with bright pink, purple, and blue frosting, each finished with little “pearls” on top. I made simple cups of blue Jello with crushed graham crackers to look like sand, which the kids loved. The sugar cookies were decorated with sliced almonds to resemble sand dollars, and one of my favorite little details was the wafer cookies, “glued” together with colorful frosting to look like clamshells, each with a pearl tucked inside. I always love creating a well-balanced dessert table with a little something different for everyone to enjoy.

Now, if I’m being completely honest, the goodie bag station was the one area I didn’t spend as much time on this year, and it shows a little. I kept it simple with clear bags that the kids could fill themselves, which actually ended up being fun for them. I set out fish crackers, mermaid-themed temporary tattoos, and clip-in mermaid hair pieces. For this party, I put more focus and energy on the dessert table and the handmade decorations, and overall, I’m really happy I did. Those were the elements that made the biggest impact.

As for the kids, they truly didn’t need much to have a great time. For the first half of the party, they stayed inside, happily entertaining themselves with toys and just being together. After cake, we moved things outside where they played in the baby pool and spent the rest of the time blowing bubbles and running around. It was simple, easy, and a great way to burn off that sugar rush.
At the end of the day, this party was such a good reminder that you don’t have to stay in your usual lane to create something beautiful. Stepping outside of my pastel comfort zone led to a party that felt bold, playful, and completely fitting for a four-year-old who loves all things magical and colorful. I hope you found some inspiration here for your own mermaid birthday party. If you did, I’d love to know in the comments!
