Three Scoops of Fun

Happy birthday banner and decorations for a 3 Scoops of Fun themed third birthday party.

Our Little Girl is 3 Scoops of Fun! 🍦

With my daughter’s ever-growing love of ice cream, 3 Scoops of Fun jumped out to me as the perfect birthday party theme to celebrate her turning three. From sprinkle decorations galore to a DIY sundae bar, I wanted it to feel like stepping into her very own little ice cream shop. We kept everything at home, filled it with sweet details (and even sweeter treats), and somehow managed to balance Pinterest-perfect moments with real-life toddler chaos. It was colorful, creative, and one of those parties I know I’ll be thinking about long after the sprinkles are cleaned up.

Decorating for an Ice Cream Themed Birthday Party

Decorations for a 3 Scoops of Fun themed third birthday party.I had so much fun with this theme! I must have spent hours scrolling through Pinterest, saving every ice cream decoration idea I could find and dreaming up how to bring it all together. Between that and the all-nighter I pulled the night before the party, I’ll admit I stretched myself a little thin, but it was so worth it! Seeing everything come together exactly how I had imagined made it all feel a little bit magical.

For my parties, I usually aim for a mix of Amazon finds and homemade decorations. It’s the easiest way to create something that feels special without totally overwhelming myself. Last year, for Rose’s cow-themed birthday party, I was deep in the newborn phase with two kids under two and barely functioning on sleep, so DIY just wasn’t in the cards. Amazon absolutely came to the rescue, and while I kept the decor simple, I was still able to make her cake and cupcakes, which turned out so cute and felt like a little win in that season.

This year felt different in the best way. With my girls a little older, I finally had pockets of time in the evenings to get creative again, and I definitely took full advantage. What started as a few simple ideas quickly turned into me going completely overboard with handmade details… but honestly, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. It felt good to put my creative hat back on and pull out my craft supplies that had been gathering dust over the last year.

Ice cream cone banner made of felt.A new hobby I stumbled into last year was making play food out of felt, and I’ve been completely hooked. So far I’ve mostly stuck to cookies… aside from one slightly sad-looking donut that we won’t talk about. Naturally, I decided to take on an ice cream–themed felt banner for the fireplace. I went back and forth on the design and colors more times than I’d like to admit, but once I finally landed on a vision, I spent night after night sewing with the hum of the TV in the background.

I’ve always loved how Pixar sneaks little Easter eggs into their movies, so I decided to do the same with this party. Hidden within the garland are a couple of nods to Rose’s past birthday birthday parties. Can you tell which ones they are? One ice cream cookie is watermelon-themed for her “One in a Melon” first birthday, and another is cow-themed for her “Moo, Moo I’m Two” second birthday. I’m not sure if anyone noticed in the moment, but it made it feel extra special to me and now I’m fully inspired to tuck little Easter eggs into future parties.

The decor overall leaned heavily into the ice cream theme with lots of playful “sprinkle” details woven throughout. I wanted it to feel light, sweet, and a little whimsical, like stepping into a toddler-sized ice cream dream without it being overly bright or overwhelming. The pastel color palette kept everything cohesive, while the sprinkle elements added that extra layer of fun and texture that tied it all back to the theme. Little elements like stacked ice cream cones in glass jars added such an easy, budget-friendly touch while still making the whole space feel styled and intentional, proving that even the simplest details can make a big impact when they tie into the theme.

The Balloon Sprinkle Staircase

At the last minute (i.e., the morning of), I felt like the staircase could use a touch of ice cream charm, so I created a white balloon arch going up the railing and added pastel paper cut-outs as “sprinkles.”

I always have so much fun putting together a big balloon arch for birthday parties, but with everything else I had going on, I kept it a little simpler this year. I stuck with one of my go-to Amazon balloon options, which have always worked well for me, though I ended up using balloons all in one size. If I were to do it again, I’d probably choose a kit with a mix of sizes to give it a bit more dimension. That said, it still came together beautifully, especially once I added the “sprinkles” I cut out with my Cricut, which really brought it to life and tied it into the theme. And if you take anything from this, let it be this: a good balloon kit and an electric balloon pump are absolute lifesavers when it comes to party prep.

Wall covered in "sprinkles" for an ice-cream-themed birthday party. The Sprinkle Wall

One of the first things you see when you walk into our house is a large, empty wall, and every year I like to challenge myself to turn it into something fun for the party. This theme made it especially easy, just cover it in sprinkles. It was one of those simple ideas that ended up making a huge impact. I found a sprinkle shape in Cricut Design Space, cut what felt like an endless amount in soft pastel colors, and scattered them across the wall until it was completely covered. I loved it so much that I carried the same sprinkle detail over to the staircase balloons to tie everything together.

Hand-Sewn Felt Ice Cream Banner

This piece I mentioned earlier, but it’s worth saying again, I absolutely loved making this felt ice cream banner. I started by pulling inspiration from images in Cricut Design Space, then created my own templates, cut them out, and traced each piece onto felt I found at JoAnn Fabrics. From there, it was a lot of late nights sewing… to the point where I genuinely didn’t think I could look at another ice cream cookie by the end.

To make it more functional, I added an extra layer of felt to the back of each piece so they could slide along the string, which made the spacing easy to adjust when hanging it up. It ended up being one of my favorite details from the whole party. Especially with the Easter eggs I had thrown in that I mentioned earlier.

I’m honestly considering putting together a separate step-by-step post showing exactly how I made them in case anyone else wants to try it. Would that be something you’d want to see?

DIY hanging ice cream cone.Hanging Ice Cream Cones

This was another DIY I was especially proud of. I had spotted something similar on Pinterest but couldn’t find any instructions, so I decided to figure it out myself. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, right? I started by forming the cone out of sparkly paper and securing it with hot glue. Then I wrapped a foam ball in fabric I found at Walmart and attached it to the top of the cone. For the “ice cream” detail, I bunched extra fabric around it and glued it in place to give it that soft, swirled look. Finally, I added a thin ribbon to the top so I could hang them from the chandelier above our table. I loved how they turned out, and I’m already planning to put together a full tutorial soon.

Real Cones in Jars

I displayed actual ice cream cones upright in glass jars around the house as part of the decor, and it ended up being one of my favorite simple touches. It was such an easy, budget-friendly way to tie in the theme without any extra crafting, but it still made everything feel cohesive and thoughtfully styled. Sometimes it’s those little details that really pull a space together, and these were equal parts effortless and adorable.

Cricut “Happy Birthday” Banner

Once again, my trusty Cricut came to the rescue and helped me create the perfect “Happy Birthday” banner. I kept the design simple but added in a few fun details to tie it into the theme; little ice cream cones and, of course, sprinkles were a must. It ended up being one of those pieces that pulled everything together without overpowering the space, and I loved how it added a personalized touch to the setup.

Toppings for an ice cream bar including fruit, candy, nuts and sauces. The Dessert Bar (The Star of the Party)

The ice cream bar was a definite hit at the party, but the malt station was loved by all, especially the adults. While the kids piled their bowls high with sprinkles and toppings, the grown-ups gravitated toward the blender to make classic malts and milkshakes, which added such a fun, nostalgic element to the whole setup. I set out traditional glass malt glasses, and I loved how they gave everything that old-school ice cream shop feel. It was one of those details that made the whole experience feel a little extra special for everyone, not just the kids.

Ice Cream Flavors

  • Chocolate

  • Vanilla

  • Sugar-free strawberry

  • Sugar-free avocado mint

I kept the ice cream tucked away in the freezer until it was time for dessert to make sure everything stayed perfectly frozen and ready to go. Since we had a few sugar-free guests, I also made two sugar-free options the night before using recipes I found on Pinterest, which ended up being such a great addition and much appreciated. When dessert time rolled around, we brought everything out, started scooping, and let the kids go wild, creating their own sundaes.

Toppings Bar

  • Chocolate chips

  • Cut strawberries

  • Sprinkles (obviously)

  • Pastel M&M’s

  • Cherries

  • Chopped nuts

  • Hot fudge

  • Caramel sauce

  • Strawberry sauce

Birthday cake decorated for an ice-cream-themed birthday party topped with waffle cone and sprinkles. The Cake

What’s a birthday without cake? I’ll be honest, I didn’t have a fully planned design and ended up pulling this together just minutes before guests arrived. While unpacking the waffle cones, I noticed several were broken, which actually sparked the idea to incorporate them into the cake instead of tossing them. I used the larger broken pieces as a backdrop behind the “3” candle to give it some height and dimension, then added the smaller pieces around the base for texture. From there, I finished it off with a generous layer of sprinkles and just leaned into the chaos a little. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was creating in the moment, but I ended up really loving how it turned out.

Cupcakes designed to look like ice-cream cones.Cupcake Cones

Did you know you can bake cupcakes right inside ice cream cones? I didn’t either until I came across a tutorial on Pinterest, and once I saw it, I knew I had to try it. They were surprisingly simple to make and ended up being one of my favorite desserts on the table. It was such a fun little surprise for guests, and the kids especially loved the extra frosting piped on top to look like an ice cream swirl. And of course… sprinkles made another appearance.

To round out the dessert table, I also offered three different types of cookies, because in my opinion, a good dessert spread should always have a little something for everyone to choose from.

The Craft Table

Craft table where you can decorate paper ice cream comes and paper scoops of ice cream. The kids had an absolute blast running around, fueled by sugar, and taking turns at a homemade ski ball game we set up. It was the perfect mix of a little structure and a lot of free play. I also created a simple craft station where they could design their own ice cream creations, which ended up being a big hit. I pre-glued paper waffle cones onto white sheets and cut out pastel “scoops” in pink, yellow, blue, purple, and green to match the party colors. The kids could stack their scoops however they liked, then decorate them with crayons, glitter glue, and a little paper cherry on top. It was easy to set up, kept them entertained, and doubled as a cute little keepsake to take home.

Goodie Bag Station

To wrap everything up, I set aside a small area for goodie bags and a few extra treats for the kids to take home. I found the goodie boxes on Amazon and used my Cricut to create personalized ice cream truck cutouts that I glued on the front, which made them feel a little more special. Inside, I added some of Rose’s favorite treats at the time (a bag of yogurt covered fruit and a YumEarth lollipop) along with the cutest macaron-shaped sidewalk chalk I found at JoAnn’s. I can no longer find that product on their website but this one by Kit’s is very similar. Since they looked very realistic, I individually wrapped each one and labeled it “chalk”… which turned out to be a very good call after a few parents admitted they definitely would’ve mistaken it for a cookie or bath bomb.

Goodie bag station at an ice cream themed birthday party. There were also a couple of extras that didn’t quite fit inside the boxes but were too good not to include. The ice cream truck bubble wands were a last minute Target find that were so perfectly on theme, I couldn’t pass them up. I set them out next to the favors so each child could grab one on their way out. I also made individual cotton candy cones using real waffle cones, wrapped in leftover ice cream-themed wrapping paper from one of Rose’s gifts she had opened the day before. It was such a simple detail, but it ended up being one of my favorite finishing touches.

At the end of it all, I truly loved how this party came together. The late nights of sewing and the all-nighter setting everything up felt completely worth it once the house was full and the kids were running around covered in sprinkles. There are even a few little details I didn’t manage to photograph, like the pink and white striped awning I taped above our sliding door as a nod to an old-school ice cream shop, but those are the kinds of things that made it feel complete in the moment.

If you’re planning your own ice cream-themed party, I hope this gave you a little inspiration (and maybe the confidence to try a few DIYs!). And if you do recreate any part of it, or have ideas of your own, I’d genuinely love to hear what would your version of “3 Scoops of Fun” look like! 🍦✨
